Equipment

The most vital tools at your disposal in training your dog are the collar and lead. There is no point in commanding a dog to do something unless you are in a position to enforce that command. That is why all training is carried out on the lead.

Although in most instances, a standard collar and lead is adequate for training purposes, there are several types available which are specifically designed to provide more control over the dog.

There are ‘check’ collars that tighten when the lead is jerked and release as soon as the lead is relaxed. A chain style of check collar may get caught up in the hair of a long-haired breed; so nylon or leather equivalents are available.

Always ask your veterinary practice for advice about which collar is appropriate for your breed and how to fit it correctly.
