Hearing Dogs for the Deaf

Since the success of the Guide Dogs for the Blind scheme, it has become clear that dogs can also help deaf people. Dogs’ acute powers of hearing are well known and suitable animals can be trained to alert their owner to, for example, an alarm clock, a doorbell or a singing kettle. Dogs can even be taught to alert a deaf mother when her baby is crying.

Having a hearing dog helps the severely deal to enjoy a new level of independence, self-sufficiency and self-confidence. But these aren’t the only benefits; the dog quickly becomes a constant companion and friend to the afflicted person and this naturally leads to a more rewarding and happier life for the deaf person.
