Making Friends with your Pet

All the animals included in this leaflet have been chosen because of their even temperaments and the fact that they don’t mind being handled. However, you should follow a few simple rules in order not to give them any nasty surprises.

Handling Gerbils and Hamsters

Gerbils and hamsters should be picked up by sliding one hand underneath, and then holding the animal in your cupped hands. Secure the gerbil by gently gripping the base of the tail with your thumb and forefinger, as he is liable to make sudden rushes. (But don’t grasp the tail lower down, as the skin might come off and damage him.) Never wake a sleeping hamster by picking him up – blow on him softly first to wake him up.

Handling Guinea Pigs and Rabbits

Pick up your rabbit by scooping him up with one arm, with your hand under his rear quarters. Hold him against your body and rest your other hand on his shoulders to restrain him. A rabbit’s ears are sensitive so never hold him by them (you wouldn’t like it either).

You can pick up a guinea pig in much the same way, but as they are usually smaller you can support them in one hand instead of with your arm. Use the other hand to restrain him and make sure that he doesn’t fall – guinea pigs can be jumpy on occasions too!
