To the Parent
Owning a pet can be a very rewarding and educational
experience for a child. It can teach a child consideration
for others, respect for nature and the benefits and rewards
of affectionate behaviour. However, owning a pet also
involves definite responsibilities and it is very important
to help your child understand this at the outset. Owning
a pet is not a short term fad, it must be seen as a long
term commitment for the duration of the pet’s life,
and one that will probably involve effort as well as
pleasure.
This short leaflet contains recommendations on the choice
of a first pet for a child. You should encourage your
child to read it, perhaps read it together and also to
learn something about the pet itself. This can be done
from books, radio and television programmes and from
experts. If this advice is followed, it could lead to
a long and happy relationship with all sorts of animals.
